ICAST Day 1 and 2 – July 13th & July 14
Even though I’ve been fishing since I was a tiny tadpole and I’ve used everything from grubs to top waters to bottom rigs to pimped-out pop-tops, I never ever knew, until this wild Las Vegas extravaganza, that so many companies made fishing lures. Sure, you have your massive companies like Rapala, MirrOlure and Yo-Zuri but, my oh my, there are probably 40 or 50 fishing lures companies selling their wares here in Vegas and lots are mom and pop shops with all kinds of rubbery, wormy, dealy-wackers. I guess it makes sense with 20 million people fishing in the USA alone but wow, I’m still amazed.
Instead of going to the highly-advertised Peepshow Show, which I’m sure was attended by a few from the fishing contingent, I went to an interesting awards reception last night for the newest, coolest, and most innovative products introduced this year. Categories were everything from fishing rods to eyewear to apparel. Most of the winners were industry big guys like Frabill, Costa del Mar, Hobie Cat, Pure Fishing, G. Loomis and Abu Garcia so I guess no big surprise there. Hey, these guys make some cool stuff.
Perhaps the highlight was an Elvis impersonator singing a few tunes on what sounded like a $99.99 sound system. Viva Las Vegas never sounded so scratchy. But hey, the snacks and drinks were free so the complaints were few.
Hitting the show today to spread the good word of Guy Harvey’s conservation efforts and push the Sustainable Seafood Issue out there. Wish me luck. Viva Guy Harvey!!
ICAST – Day 1 – July 13th
ICAST, the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades, is the World’s Biggest Fishing Show. Naturally, that’s why everyone shows up in crazy Las Vegas where the nearest fishing is Lake Mead with its mythical 10-foot-long catfish hanging around the depths of Hoover Dam.
Even the USA Women’s Soccer team cannot stop the force of ICAST (that’s a joke, sort of). More than 7,000 members representing 63 countries are here in Sin City to celebrate fishing celebrities and gazillions of innovative new products – from lures to lines to electronics to you name it.
And, of course, I am here to mingle and jingle with the crowd and bring you the inside story. What happens at ICAST, does NOT stay in Vegas. It ends up in my blog and on my iPhone!
That’s all for now. I’m about to brave the 100-degree desert heat and herd of taxis and thousands of my newest fishing buddies.
