The 2016 Flounder Bowl is in the books. This annual event is hosted by the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association, held at Dare Marina and Yacht Sales, and is only made possible by great sponsor support. Cool, northeast winds made it very pleasant on land for a barbeque at the captains meeting Friday night and at the seafood party Sunday afternoon. The wind did not make for great fishing conditions out on the water. With the breezy conditions and a fairly lackluster flounder bite, many boats decided not to fish. A total of 57 boats entered the competition. They universally reported that fishing was tough.
Boats could fish either Saturday or Sunday. Most chose to fish Sunday as the wind was not quite as stiff. While the flounder fishing has been tough, cobia have been very numerous. Most of the boats fishing, reported cobia encounters and a good number were caught by Flounder Bowl participants that could not resist casting a bait in front of the cobia cruising by their boats.
With some of the best flounder anglers around looking for them, flounder were caught in spite of the conditions. Winners were determined by the combined weight of the team’s three heaviest flounder. There was an optional calcutta that teams could enter for the single heaviest flounder and another for the 3-fish stringer weight. There were individual awards for the heaviest flounder weighed in by a youth, a lady, and a member of the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association. There was also a Sponsors Challenge where boats fishing for sponsors compete for a trophy and bragging rights for the year.
This year’s winner is Extreme Rehab captained by Justin Sipe. They weighed in at 12.91 pounds. In addition to winning the Flounder Bowl, they also won the 3-Fish Calcutta for total earnings of $7,340.
The second placed team was sponsored by M & M Custom Painting and was captained by Zack Hoffman. Their stringer weighed 12.71 pounds earning them $2,000 and the Sponsors Challenge Trophy.
In third place was the Bonita Chaser team captain by Donnie Bowers. They weighed in 12.28 pounds of flounder and reported that they caught 3 cobia as well. Their flounder were worth $1,500.
Fourth Place was won by the George’s Seafood team captained by Chris Mortin. They weighed in 11.93 pounds winning $1,000.
In fifth place was the Hopkin Gun & Tackle team captained by Steven Hodges. They won $500 with their 11.83 pound stringer.
The Fishing Fever III team, captained by Paul Ewing took sixth place with an 11.57 pound stringer. They won $250.
The big fish Calcutta was won by the Fish Hard team captained by Scott Gregg. Their 6.73 pound flounder was the heaviest of the tournament and won them $2,880.
Each team that did not place in the top six was entered into a “lucky dog” drawing. You had to be in attendance to win. The first team drawn was not there making the second team drawn a really lucky dog. The lucky dog winner was J. T. Hale who walked away with $500.
The top youth angler was Kenny Crenshaw, fishing on the Highpoint. His 3.16 pound flounder won him $100 and a pair of sunglasses donated by Costa.
The top lady angler was Rachel Nelson, sponsored by Thomas Wilson Insurance. Her 4.73 pound flounder won her $100 and a pair of sunglasses donated by Costa.
The heaviest flounder caught by a member of the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association was a 4.88 pound fish caught by Craig Freeman. He won $500.
Proceeds from the Flounder Bowl have been used to make donations to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, the CCA, RFA, Children’s Fishing Clinic, Salem United Methodist Church Wickel Food Pantry, Youth Challenge Inc., Wish A Fish, and to local families in need.
The Flounder Bowl is only possible through the support of our sponsors.
